Connecting our Communities with On-Demand Bus Services

Byron Shire urgently needs an integrated transport strategy. The Greens are calling for a strategy that includes innovative public transport options, like on-demand buses, and a comprehensive approach to active transport and cycling infrastructure.

As long-time locals, we recognise the critical need for reliable public transport in our area. The current limited bus services make it nearly impossible for residents of all ages to navigate our community without a car. This issue is especially pressing for our elderly population, who often face isolation and difficulty accessing essential services such as shopping and medical appointments, and our youth population, who are not yet able to drive. And everyone experiences the challenge of parking in many of our towns and villages.

Despite our community calling for action on transport for years, no substantial action has been taken.

It is time for us to address these challenges through a comprehensive approach that includes both an On-Demand Bus Service and an expanded active transport network.

What is On-Demand Bus Service?

On-Demand is a flexible public transport service that offers tailored transportation to connect you with key locations such as transport hubs, shopping centers, and hospitals. This service allows you to book a pick-up from your home or another convenient location and travel to your destination.

Successful On-Demand services are already operational in Moree, Coffs Harbour, and parts of the Northern Rivers. It's time for Byron Shire to benefit from these innovations and implement a comprehensive active transport strategy.

A Broader Active Transport Strategy

In addition to the On-Demand Bus Service, our strategy includes:

  • Increasing Cycleways: Expanding and improving our network of cycleways to make cycling a safer and more attractive option for commuting and recreation.
  • Upgrading Pathways: Enhancing existing pathways to ensure they are accessible for all residents, including those with mobility challenges.

These improvements will not only make it easier to get around without a car but will also promote a healthier and more sustainable lifestyle.
